The full mechanism of our skin is a very complex inter-related system, but in every person it largely consists of two key proteins – the protein elastin, a spring like protein that gives our skin its elasticity, and the protein collagen, a fiber like protein that gives our skin its strength. These proteins are the building blocks of our skin and when they become damaged, our skin suffers, the result being tired, inelastic skin and most unfortunately, wrinkles!


The enemies of elastin and collagen are free radicals, electron hungry molecules that attack proteins causing them to lose shape. When free radicals come into contact with collagen or elastin proteins, they ‘steal’ electrons changing the shape of the protein, once out of shape, it can no longer serve it’s purpose - shape is everything. As we age, and as free radicals take their toll on the collagen and elastin in our skin, our skin loses its elasticity and it’s strength. Free radicals do unfortunately exist naturally within our body as a waste product of our metabolic system, but their concentrations are also increased by environmental factors such as UV, radiation, pollution, smoking and poor diet.


A bit about some of the actives in this serum:


Collagen, made up of protein, is really the main building block of skin, giving the skin its smooth, and youthful appearance. As we age, collagen is lost, and this gives way to aged, wrinkled looking skin.

The loss of collagen and elastin is a natural part of the aging process, which can cause the skin to become less smooth, firm, and elastic.

CoQ10 seeks out and neutralizes free radicals, reducing their concentrations and minimizing their effect on collagen and elastin in the skin. Without molecules like Coq10 our skin would dramatically degrade. The levels ofCoq10 in a person is highest in childhood and reduces with age, this drop in concentration of antioxidants like Coq10 is one of the leading causes of aging skin. However, Coq10 can be replenished by eating balanced diet that is rich in antioxidants, but the issue with that is that only a tiny amount makes it to the skin after the process of digestion and absorption by vital internal organs and tissues. This is where topical application of CoQ10 plays its role.


Resveratrol:


One method of mitigating collagen loss is through increasing oestrogen levels. Resveratrol among its other properties also has phytoestrogenic properties, meaning it is a source of oestrogen derived from plants, and is now of particular interest as its application may mitigate collagen loss without the risks associated with other hormonal therapies, thus improving the visible signs of ageing.


Resveratrol’s antioxidant activity is its most potent weapon against ageing. As a polyphenolic antioxidant, resveratrol performs a dual antioxidant role. In addition to neutralising free radicals, thus reducing ongoing damage, it also increases the production of other naturally occurring antioxidants in skin cells. This means that not only does Resveratrol help repair accumulated damage, but it also prevents against skin damage in the future.


In a study published recently, resveratrol was found to result in a significant improvement in skin quality; reducing the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and uneven skin tone, whilst increasing firmness and elasticity. Resveratrol was also shown to significantly boost the skin’s antioxidant defence system allowing the skin to enhance its self-repair capabilities and rebuild following any new damage.


Astaxanthin is a potent antioxidant known as a carotenoid, found in various foods.


• Astaxanthan which is known to have over 6000 times more antioxidants than Vitamin C and more stable too is one of our major players in this potent serum.


Studies have shown that the antioxidant ability of astaxanthin is much more powerful than Vitamin C.” Therefore, it was only a matter of time before the so-called “king of carotenoids” would find its way into our bathroom cabinets by way of bottles and tinctures. As research suggests, astaxanthin contains significantly more antioxidants than other superfood heroes. It is anywhere from 10 to 100 times more powerful than other carotenoids like beta-carotene and lycopene, and is significantly more potent than skin-enhancing vitamin C and vitamin E. The beauty of this powerhouse ingredient is that it works very well with vitamin C and others ingredients in our formulation to enhance the overall efficacy of this serum.

Recent research has found that the powerhouse ingredient can do wonders for the skin, fighting everything from sun damage to fine lines and wrinkles. In fact, a 2018 review found that astaxanthin’s benefits might be more comprehensive than previous research suggests, and include but not limited to photoprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects.
