The full mechanism of our skin is a very complex inter-related system, but in every person it largely consists of two key proteins – the protein elastin, a spring like protein that gives our skin its elasticity, and the protein collagen, a fiber like protein that gives our skin its strength. These proteins are the building blocks of our skin and when they become damaged, our skin suffers, the result being tired, inelastic skin and most unfortunately, wrinkles.


The enemies of elastin and collagen are free radicals, electron hungry molecules that attack proteins causing them to lose shape. When free radicals come into contact with collagen or elastin proteins, they ‘steal’ electrons changing the shape of the protein, once out of shape, it can no longer serve it’s purpose - shape is everything. As we age, and as free radicals take their toll on the collagen and elastin in our skin, our skin loses its elasticity and it’s strength. Free radicals do unfortunately exist naturally within our body as a waste product of our metabolic system, but their concentrations are also increased by environmental factors such as UV, radiation, pollution, smoking and poor diet.


A bit about some of the actives in this serum:


Collagen, made up of protein, is really the main building block of skin, giving the skin its smooth, and youthful appearance. As we age, collagen is lost, and this gives way to aged, wrinkled looking skin.

L-Ascorbic Acid (LAA) is well known for its ability to help with effects of photo-ageing due to UV damage and free radicals as well as hyperpigmentation among others.

The association of antioxidants astaxanthin and vitamin C promoted a significant improvement in the function of neutrophils and in the redox status according to some recent studies.

Astaxanthin is a potent antioxidant known as a carotenoid, found in various foods.

• Astaxanthan which is known to have over 6000 times more antioxidants than Vitamin C and more stable too is one of our major players in this potent serum.

Studies have shown that the antioxidant ability of astaxanthin is much more powerful than Vitamin C." Therefore, it was only a matter of time before the so-called "king of carotenoids" would find its way into our bathroom cabinets by way of bottles and tinctures. As research suggests, astaxanthin contains significantly more antioxidants than other superfood heroes. It is anywhere from 10 to 100 times more powerful than other carotenoids like beta-carotene and lycopene, and is significantly more potent than skin-enhancing vitamin C and vitamin E. The beauty of this powerhouse ingredient is that it works very well with vitamin C and others ingredients in our formulation to enhance the overall efficacy of this serum.

In fact, a 2018 review found that astaxanthin's benefits might be more comprehensive than previous research suggests, and include but not limited to photoprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects.

Other Ingredients: Aqua, Sodium Hyaluronate (HA- including both Low and High Molecular weights), Ferulic acid, Ethoxydiglycol, Triethanolamine (pH adjuster), Natural broad-spectrum Preservative (Butylene Alcohol, Salicylic Acid, Glycerin, Sorbic Acid), Tocopherol (Vitamin E).

Usage Recommendations: Apply to cleansed and pat-dried face using fingertips and in an upward circular motion until absorbed. A little goes a long way so dab off any excess with a clean towel and avoid putting pressure on skin during application. Gently dab and massage in lightly. Some people might feel slight stinging which is common with vitamin c, but this usually settles shortly. It is recommended to apply moisturiser after this serum which contains hyaluronic acid. HA is a powerful humectant that helps to draw moisture to your skin but to ensure that the moisture remains, a good occlusive or moisturiser is needed for the sealing against moisture loss. Use am and pm (never use vitamin c and retinol together) and wear suncream over the serum as vitamin c increases sensitivity to sun damage to skin so it’s crucial that you wear sunscreen on top. Always perform patch test prior to use and discontinue use if irritation occurs
